Sandwich Fridays — The American Combo

A classic, but does it hold up?

A quick intro for context...

Since this is my first written food "review", let me provide a bit of context. I currently work at an agency called FWD People, and every Friday we order sandwiches from a local joint called Court Street Grocers. Over the next 6 months I plan to try every sandwich (excluding breakfast ones - we already have enough of those tbh), write about it, and rate it based on equally weighted categories of flavor, texture, and structure. At the end of the 6 months, I will compile a tier list of each sandwich with my final thoughts.

The mission is simple. Eat (hopefully) good sandwiches, and write about them so that my fellow co-worker and peers, both current and new, can have something to digest and maybe...encourage someone to try something new.

I’m starting out with what I feel like is the most essential combo of ingredients of a true American classic. This sandwich is full of turkey breast, heritage ham, american cheese, coleslaw, sweet pickles, and comeback sauce on a seeded hero. The vibes of this sandwich brings back some nostalgia to me personally, like a backyard family cookout with those 8ft long heroes. I was always a fan of the American hero’s vs. the Italian ones, and this brought back a lot of old memories of celebrating my birthday in the backyard of my parents home (I’m a summer baby, and my parents would have summer BBQ’s to celebrate my birthday every July with the entire family - memories I will always cherish).

Unfortunately, the consequence of that is that it is just an average sandwich. Nothing really speaks out to me and while the flavor skews a bit high (honestly maybe because of my bias linking it to nostalgia), it’s still lacking any real punch. It's a fine sandwich, but when you have 26 other sandwiches on the menu that bolster much more interesting ingredients, its comes across basic.

As for texture and structure, the sandwich lacks any real bite and is a bit messy. From a texture POV, there isn't anything to contrast it besides the sweet pickles. It's just a mouth full of cold cuts and sauces coming from the mayo in the coleslaw and comeback sauce. The biggest issue of that is when biting into the sandwich, the seeded hero just easily slides around in your hand, having to re-adjust yourself for each bite.

Overall though, if you’re new to the world of sandwiches, start here to get a base understanding of what makes something classic.
